Type 20 Panda Mechanical Chronograph
Type 20 Panda Mechanical Chronograph
A Return to Purpose
In the early 1950s, France formalized a military chronograph specification known simply as “Type 20.” Built for aviation units navigating the demanding skies of the post-war era, these watches were designed with a singular objective: uncompromising clarity and mechanical reliability under pressure.
They were instruments first — accessories never.
The specification called for a black dial with bold Arabic numerals, a highly legible 30-minute counter, luminous hands, and robust construction capable of withstanding the rigors of cockpit life. These chronographs became trusted tools for timing maneuvers, coordinating navigation, and calculating fuel consumption in an age when precision depended entirely on mechanical ingenuity.
The Origin Watch Co. Type 20 Mechanical Chronograph draws from that disciplined heritage. It is not a reinterpretation diluted by modern fashion. It is a disciplined return to proportion, clarity, and mechanical engagement — a chronograph shaped by aviation history and built for those who appreciate the enduring romance of analog precision.
In a digital age, this is timekeeping reduced to its essentials.
Mechanical. Purposeful. Enduring.
Type 20 is available for pre-oder. Sample manufacturing is this month. Production is slotted for April and May. Shipping to you by June 2026, if not sooner.

Authentic sizing
Period accurate sizing with a true boxed sapphire crystal.
Sized at an authentic 39mm and standing 14mm thick, the case reflects the restrained proportions of mid-century pilot chronographs — substantial enough for presence, yet true to vintage ergonomics. The pump pushers and oversized crown are purposeful and tactile, echoing a time when pilots operated their instruments while gloved at altitude.
39mm diameter (not including crown) 316L stainless steel with three piece construction; top and bottom bezels mirror polished; middle section is linear brushed. The watch measures 14mm in height, 46mm lug to lug with 20mm lugs

True boxed scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with Anti-Reflective coating
Water-resistant to 10 ATM

MOVEMENT
At its heart beats a hand-wound chronograph movement — a deliberate choice. The ritual of winding connects the wearer to the mechanics within, just as aviation crews once depended on the reliability of springs, levers, and gears rather than circuits and screens. A manual chronograph is not merely nostalgic; it is mechanical honesty in its purest form that directly connects you to more than 400 years of watchmaking craftsmanship. The process of hand winding the mainspring that sets the watch in motion is an authentic ritual, directly bonding you to the engineering marvel of tiny precision parts working together to tell time.

DIAL and HANDS
Legibility rules the day (or night)
Bold Arabic numerals, high-contrast hands, and balanced twin sub-dials create cockpit-ready layout.
The dial remains faithful to the principles that defined the original Type 20 specification:
Bold, high-contrast Arabic numerals
Symmetrical bi-compax chronograph layout
Clear 30-minute totalizer for flight timing
Precise outer minute track for navigational accuracy
Sword-style hands designed for instant legibility
There is no excess. No unnecessary ornament. Every line serves a function. With the goal of less is more, we kept the design extremely simple where legibility rules the day (or night). The brass dial is painted with a flat finish, with indexes sharply printed in a contrasted paint. The flat finish of the dial is differentiated by the stunning sunburst radial pattern of the recessed sub-dials.
